Ingredients
Scale
Brownie Base
- 1½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup salted butter (1 stick)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Layers and Toppings
- ¾ cup nuts (optional, divided)
- ¼ cup mini holiday M&Ms (divided)
- ¾ cup regular holiday M&Ms (divided)
- ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (divided)
- 1 cup sweetened flaked coconut
- ¾ cup sweetened condensed milk (from a 14 ounce can)
- ¼ cup holiday sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9-inch baking pan with foil or parchment paper and spray with nonstick cooking spray for easy removal.
- Melt Chocolate and Butter: Place butter and 1½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips in a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 30 seconds, stir, then continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring each time until mixture is smooth and melted.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: Beat in sugar, then vanilla extract, followed by the eggs and egg yolk, mixing until fully incorporated and smooth.
- Add Flour: Stir in the all-purpose flour just until combined to avoid overmixing the batter.
- Bake Brownie Base: Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20 minutes. The brownies will still jiggle slightly but the top will be set.
- Add Layers: Remove brownies from the oven. Evenly layer with half of the nuts, half of the ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, half of the mini holiday M&Ms, and all of the shredded coconut.
- Pour Sweetened Condensed Milk: Evenly pour ¾ cup of sweetened condensed milk over the layered toppings and gently spread to distribute it evenly.
- Top Layers: Sprinkle remaining nuts, chocolate chips, M&Ms, and holiday sprinkles evenly over the condensed milk layer.
- Bake Again: Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until edges are golden and the center is set and just starting to brown. If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil to prevent burning.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before cutting into 9 equal squares with a sharp knife. Store in a tightly sealed container for up to one week.
Notes
- For easier cleanup and serving, line the baking pan with foil or parchment paper and spray with nonstick cooking spray.
- You can omit nuts if desired to make the recipe nut-free or substitute with your favorite nuts such as pecans or walnuts.
- If mini holiday M&Ms are unavailable, regular M&Ms can be chopped to achieve a similar texture and flavor.
- Be careful not to overbake during the second bake to keep bars moist and gooey; edges should be golden but the center slightly soft.
- Make sure to cool completely before cutting to prevent the bars from crumbling.
